BLOG 2: 20/03/2012

Alright, time for another little blog then I guess.

I've had quite a feasible day today. I went to the library and didn't really do anything except scroll through 9gag for about an hour and contemplate killing myself at the fact I have to do 5 essays and 2 exams before this year is over. Then I went to the gym and acted hench, but I did my neck in. You ever sprained your neck where you can't move your head in a certain direction? I can't move my head to the right and its doing my head in. Get it. eh? But yeah I've just realised that it proper affects your whole body!!! cos I can't move suddenly y'see cos then I get this shooting pain going up my neck like someone's rubbing peanut butter on it, but the peanut butter contains little razors...only way I can describe it. So kids, watch out when your doing shit like playing on a trampoline or something cos if you land on your neck, you is scuppered. ALSO, I just wanna say that there was some old man in the gym today and he proper pissed me off, I wanted to fill his water bottle with laxatives, see how he'd like that! Bench hogging, grey haired, vest-wearing when there's really no point, saggy titted, rude codger.

Gotta work tonight anyway. Bit of a bummer really, I'm gonna be serving drinks like i'm doing a robot dance.

Anyway its time I incorporated my interesting facts section into this blog.

TOBY'S INTERESTING FACTS.

1.) A monkey was once tried and convicted for smoking a cigarette in South Bend, Indiana

2.) Most lipstick contains fish scales (gutted girlies)

3.) Every day 2,700 people die of heart disease

4.)  In the United Kingdom, three million people play bingo every year

5.)  The acid in your stomach is strong enough to dissolve razorblades. While you certainly shouldn’t test the fortitude of your stomach by eating a razorblade or any other metal object for that matter, the acids that digest the food you eat aren’t to be taken lightly. Hydrochloric acid, the type found in your stomach, is not only good at dissolving the pizza you had for dinner but can also eat through many types of metal.

6.)  Many beers are produced using isinglass, which is a byproduct of a fishes swimbladder. If you are a vegetarian, the chances are that you arn't...because you've had a beer that uses this method.

7.)  Cat urine glows in the dark if a black light is shined upon it. This is a good way to detect cat urine in your home.

Got a shout out today from Kieran K Flex Woods, son of Nigel. He wants me to comment on why WWE was so much better in the attitude era than it is now. I say this:

Back in the day, as in like 1998-2003, wrestling was absolutely mint with Stone Cold, The Rock, Eddie Guerro, Chris Jericho, Kurt Angle, Kane, Undertaker and so on. It was really violent, what with steel chair shots to the head and constant blading and so on, and the acting was way better than it is now. However, as I CEEBS to say much more on the matter K Flex, I will briefly conclude that it was better back then, but it was extremely dangerous. Mick Foley nearly died on a number of occasions, and Chris Benoit's brain was that of an 80 year old Alzheimer's patient before he....died. The chair shots, and the diving headbutts were probably the reason. BUT yeah it was better back then.

Thats me done for today, but if anyone does have any suggestions for topics for me to write about, please let me know. Let them be very controversial and stuff, and I will wap out loads of opinions and facts on the matter.

  3. There's something you need to understand about the Attitude era. At the time, wrestling was at the peak of it's popularity, WWF was losing in a ratings war to WCW, and therefore needed to compete on a weekly basis in order to survive. When the tables turned and WWF eventually ran WCW out of business (a combination of WWF superiority and WCW mis-management) WWF effectively held the monopoly over the entire sports entertainment industry, but in doing so, rid themselves of there only competition. The weekly one-upmanship had ended, and thus the brand extension era begun. This monopoly has essentially resulted in WWE resting on their laurels, but they know that they do no have to go the lengths they did in the 90's in order to make money and sell PPV's. The best thing that can happen to the wrestling industry is that TNA pull their finger out and do something to make Vince notice. They have the potential to do that, but the people in charge of TNA just so happen to be the people that ran WCW to the ground (Vince Russo, Bischoff, Hogan etc etc). You ask any WWE wrestler what they think of TNA, and they'll say that they want nothing more than for them to be successful.

You make very valid points about health risks, but in terms of why wrestling is PG now, it also comes down to the very lucrative deals WWE has with companies that sell products aimed at kids, in particular, the multi-million pound deal they have with Mattel. The global economic crisis is of course to blame for this.

Also you need to understand the role of shifting demographics. The Attitude era was aimed at 18-30 year old males. You may have been 10/11 at the time, but the programming was not intended for you. These 18-30 year olds eventually grew up and left wrestling (a lot of them moved to MMA, or actual sports) and so from 2005 ish onwards (people who tell you the Attitude era ended in 2001 at WM 17 are wrong, the core values that made it the 'attitude' era lasted long into 2004, in fact I consider 2001-2003 wrestling's best era) WWE had to rebuild their fanbase, and in doing so have to aim it at kids. The reason John Cena is the one of the greatest of all time is that he near enough single handedly has rebuilt the fanbase for the last ten years. Without him WWE is nothing. Now eventually, these kids will grow up and demand more adult content, and will perhaps see other promotions like TNA/ROH/PWG and want more of that style of wrestling, much like the influence ECW had on WWF/WCW in the late 90's. Vince, being of sound business mind like he is, will see this shift, and act accordingly. It wouldn't be the first time. The 18-30 fans of the Attitude era grew up with the previous PG era of Hogan, Randy Savage, Shawn Michaels, Bret Hart, much like kids today have grown up with John Cena, Edge, Randy Orton. Wresting is circular.

I would argue that the shift back has begun already. Both current World Champions are ex Ring of Honor, The Rock came back and was exactly like he was in 2000 (for better or worse) and we have seen and increased amount of non-PG material, which all began with CM Punk's infamous worked shoot promo, and his general rise to the top. In terms of quality, the mid to lower card is arguably better than it was in the late 90's. I would like to see Tyson Tomko and A-Train wrestle a match the quality of Dolph Ziggler or Evan Bourne. The 4 main events in this year's Wrestlemania are arguably the greatest in history, and it has the potential to be the best 'Mania since 17 or maybe 20.

I had so much fun writing that.
